April Meeting

Joel Trick with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will present a program on the Kirtlands warbler and piping plover. Both of these endangered species are found in Marinette County.

Earth Day

Earth Week will be celebrated with the showing of a film at UW-Marinette on Thursday, April 22. Dr. Wendel Johnson, professor of biological sciences, will introduce the film “Tara, Journey to the Heart of the Climate Machine” at 7:00 pm at UW-Marinette in M-117 of the Main Building. The film is free and open to the public.

Tuesday Morning Birdwalk

MAY 4th - 8:00 AM - DENISE TAYLOR’S FARM - Menominee, MI
The Taylor farm is in the UP and is always a pleasure to go there to bird watch. We will start in the yard and go through woods which have both high and low areas, and end at the open fields where species of grass land sparrows might be found singing and nesting. Plan on a 2-1/2 to 3 hour walk.

Thursday Morning Birdwalk

MAY 6TH – 7:30 AM – POND ROAD, PESHTIGO HARBOR
Early morning offers the best birding opportunities here, especially if there is a wind from the south the night before. We will walk a circle starting were the gravel road begins. We will bird the road to the bay, head north through the woods along the bay coming out in the field where the bluebirds nest and back to the cars. We should see shorebirds, water birds, many passerines and possibly the resident merlin. Meet on Pond Road where the pavement turns to gravel. Plan on a 3 to 3 1/2 hour walk.

MAY 11TH -7:30 AM - HARMONY HARDWOODS ARBORETUM-Peshtigo
We are fortunate to have this stand of majestic old hardwoods near us. Along with the migration of passerines, the wildflowers will be in full bloom. A newly fledged great-horned owl or the beautiful scarlet tanager that nests here every year could be seen. On County E, turn into the Master Gardner’s road, meet by the gate just past the gardens and fields. Plan on a 3 hour walk

MAY 18TH-7:30 AM- HEMLOCK CURVE NATURE TRAIL-Peshtigo
The trail of the fairly-new nature trail takes you through low woods, open fields, hemlocks and hardwoods that should be bursting with wildflowers. The trail goes along the Peshtigo River were ducks and other water birds might be seen. We will also look for nesting blue-winged warblers, hawks and eagles. Meet at the parking lot. Take W. Front St. in Peshtigo, turn left on Harbor Road and go .9 mile to the sign and turn left. Plan on a 2-1/2 to 3 hour walk.

Tuesday Morning Birdwalk

MAY 25TH-7:30 AM – WASTE MANAGEMENT MITIGATION PONDS-Menominee
These shallow ponds are magnets for shorebirds, ducks, grebes and geese. The surrounding woods and fields are good places to see spring migrants. Meet at the parking lot just west of Waste Management’s landfills on Elmwood Road, Menominee. Plan on a 2-1/2 to 3 hours walk. If you have a scope, bring it, we will use it on their observation deck.
